One of the eighty grand affairs at the TD Halifax Jazz Festival, July 8-16, 2011.

Digable Planets (NYC)
hip hop / jazz
It seems strange now to imagine a time when a hip-hop anthem was a crossover hit, but in 1993 Digable Planets’ first single "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)” was just that. Through calm, clever innovation, the trio pushed hip-hop into the public consciousness. Careful distillation was key: taking classic jazz samples from the likes of Art Blakey and Freddie Hubbard, morphing them into breezy beats and spattering them with observations on anything from Jean-Paul Sartre to the summer heat. After earning a Grammy in 1994, the group disbanded due to creative differences, leaving fans with only two albums worth of material to mull over. In 2005, the retrospective
Beyond The Spectrum reinvigorated an interest in both fans and members alike and a reunion ensued. With an exciting second-wind--original members Butterfly and Doodlebug, along with Nigerian-born female MC Madarocka and a stellar backing band--have been delighting crowds across North America.

Nomadic Massive (MTL)
Global / hip hop / R&B / Chlean
Nomadic Massive are a group that truly embody their sound. Hailing from as far away as Haiti, Algeria, France and Argentina and as close as Ottawa; the nine members have all found their way around the globe to settle in Montreal and form the global force that is Nomadic Massive. Their sound is a veritable potluck of the members’ collective past: steady hip-hop beats, Chilean guitar, shimmering trumpet and plenty of pitch-perfect vocals of both the rap and R&B persuasion. Yet the cross-cultural sound that bursts from this group is no accident; it aligns with their inclusive, socially positive mentality and is delivered with such grace and earnestness that you will find yourself shaking your hips and thinking to yourself ‘what a wonderful world’.

Great local food vendors and a full-service bar are on-site to ensure you have a fantastic time.
Designated 19+ unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
